The Oberoi Cecil
About The Oberoi Cecil, Shimla:
The Oberoi Cecil is one of Shimla's oldest hotels. The site started in the 1880s as Tendril Cottage, a home Rudyard Kipling is said to have used while writing Plain Tales from the Hills. Through the British Raj, the Cecil became a fashionable address in Shimla, known for its ballroom evenings. It also has a place in the history of Indian hospitality. Mohan Singh Oberoi, who founded The Oberoi Group, started his career at the Cecil in the 1920s and later came to own it. The hotel was rebuilt in the early twentieth century and reopened in 1997 after a full restoration. It still has its period character: wood floors, antique furniture and original artefacts, with the service Oberoi built its name on.
The hotel looks out over a cedar valley and the Himalayas, which makes it a good choice for an engagement, a honeymoon, an anniversary or a small wedding in the hills. It also has two meeting halls for conferences and seminars, each next to a private lounge for refreshments and side discussions. The team will adjust the spaces and menus to suit a personal or corporate event. Event spaces at The Oberoi Cecil are as follows - The Kipling Hall is the larger of the two, and sits next to a lounge that works well for breakaway conversations and The Curzon Room is a more classic meeting room near the restaurant, so groups can be seated together to dine.
The Oberoi Cecil has 75 rooms and suites, all in a heritage style:
The Luxury Suite has a master bedroom and a separate living room. The suite bathroom has a bathtub, a separate shower, twin washbasins and a vanity counter. Original artefacts and period detailing run through it.
